XMPP Beginner Question

Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2009-06-30 03:26

Hi everyone,

This is going to seem like a very newbie question but I really need help. I am interested in working on an iphone chat program. I heard about xmpp and it sounded like a great solution! I bought "XMPP: The Definitive Guide" and read it in 2 days. I am a big java fan and heard about TIGASE, however, I have no clue where to start. Can anyone give me a leg up on how to begin?

What kind of web hosting should I look for? How can I make a custom server so that I can customize the server for my specific application. Thanks for any help!

The best way to start is

The best way to start is just to.... start. Download Tigase, install it and start playing. Make a plan. If you have any specific questions please come back and ask.
For a web hosting I would recommend Flosoft. They have great offer from web hosting, jabber hosting (based on Tigase) to dedicated servers. So I am sure you can find something for you.
For a customized server - I can recommend using Tigase too. This is just a Java application, there is inline - JavaDoc documentation as well as lots of development guides on the website. It is very extensible and you can easily add new stuff or change existing ones.
Again in case of specific questions... ask.
